M. Hibbard Frozen Custard
Hibbard’s Frozen Custard was established 1939 by Harold F. Hibbard
in Lewiston, NY. Harold started with a relatively small stand and
one machine that is currently still in use at the original store.
Harold Hibbard got the idea for a custard stand from his neighbor at
a vacation home in Florida. He brought the recipe to Lewiston, where
he owned a Chevrolet agency and several gas stations, and picked a
spot of vacant land he owned to put the stand. It’s been there ever
since.
This landmark was passed down to Harold’s sons James Hibbard and
Donald Hibbard. They were given control of Hibbard’s, which had
recently added a full-service restaurant to take advantage of
traffic from the Lewiston Suspension Bridge and the workers building
the Niagara Power Project.
The stand’s high popularity remains the same, drawing visitors and
residents to the Lewiston location. The fundamental idea hasn’t
changed — less air churned in the custard makes for a more intense
flavor.
Steel Sculpture artist, Michael Joseph Hibbard, fourth generation of
the Hibbard family, saw the potential of his family product and knew
it could have the equally dramatic effects on people in South FL
that it did and still does, on Lewiston Natives. With this thought
in mind, he used his creative abilities to form M. Hibbard Frozen
Custard in Weston, FL. Michael’s purpose is to give the opportunity
to people living in all areas to discover the same great taste that
Lewiston residents did in 1939, by using the unique recipe’s of his
Great-Grandfather.
